The facts of the matter are that apart from some short trips to Saudi and Kuwait I have not passed a single day in the last 35 years without having some sort of alcoholic drink, those that know me will know the enormity of the mission I am about to embark on.
I have decided to join Sober October both to raise funds for a great charity, Macmillan Cancer Support and in an effort to cull a terrible habit that has dominated my entire working life.
So why sponsor me? The answer is twofold really.

1. I want to make as big a contribution to Macmillan as possible but more important to me is to get the backing of as many people as possible. I know times are tough but even if you sponsor me 50p, please make your name visible and you will be one more person I will be beholden to.
2. I am not going to become a hermit, in fact I want to put myself through as many ‘trigger points’ as possible. A large amount of my drinking has been business related over the years. So, if you happen to meet up with me please do not refrain from inviting me to the pub but now you are aware please don’t try and cajole me into having ‘just one drink’ or surprise me with a drink (unless you have thought ahead and have found a pub with Thatchers zero or any other non alcoholic Cider!!).
On a final point, reference the second paragraph, I lied a little bit. Last week I honestly thought I had better try to see if I could handle this without the need for a medically supervised residential detox, fortunately I survived so I am going for it.
